FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was created in 1989 by inventor Dean Kaman and colleagues at MIT to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, FIRST, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering.
The FIRST Buckeye Regional robotics competition is one of a series of regional FIRST Robotics tournaments (currently 41) that take place across the nation during March and early April of each year. The Buckeye Regional tournament traditionally attracts more than 50 teams from Ohio and other states, with a significant number of them representing northeast Ohio. Several teams from SMART Consortium member school districts have competed very successfully in the FIRST Buckeye regional and have gone on to attain national honors at the FIRST Robotics Championship.
